Town Of Poughkeepsie Police Department Celebrates Youth Academy

The five-day academy, offered to students in high school, was the second for the department and is aimed at providing positive interaction with police officers and create a better understanding and communication between the officers and young people, said Capt. Ken Roman.

The academy was conducted by Officer Christopher Hamel and Officer Bard Cookinham who provided classroom instruction, as well as demonstrations and reality-based training sessions.

During the five days, the students received training in the history of law enforcement, search and seizure, defensive tactics, use of force, arrest procedures, SWAT tactics, traffic stops, K-9 and firearms training simulator, among other topics.

The students were from Spackenkill, Roosevelt and Ketcham high schools. 

A graduation ceremony and reception were held for the teens and their families on June 30. The department plans to host the Academy again next year.
